Valve canceled game.

Once upon a time (recently) Valve entered pre-production for a new story-driven four-player coop game. With a fantasy theme it was to be unlike anything the company had ever made before.

Its existence was confirmed via the portfolio of an artist who worked on its concept imagery. Drew Wolf would describe his work as "character development for an internal R&D project", the next best thing to a Half-Life 3 announcement.

If the character design seems DotA inspired, that's no coincidence. The artist states:

Over the course of four years I was directly responsible for the visual development of over one hundred characters and creatures featured in-game [DOTA2]

Although Drew Wolf doesn't state that the game has been cancelled, the release of what would normally be NDA'd pre-production images suggests that we shouldn't expect to hear anymore more about the game.
