Dry Rot in America

I found an interesting archive written by Ron Paul, August 2, 2005, called the Sausage Factory. It was about an agreement called CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement). He describes the shameless pork barreling, back room deals and shenanigans that occurred that night.

The agreement was written by big business and it was intended to only benefit big business. After house rules were broken, time limits exceeded it finally passed at midnight. In order to get it to pass shameless deals were made and in the end any benefit that people in America may have gained was lost in the Senate and White House Veto.

Here is the link to the archive....

I decided to follow the story and see where this agreement would lead. I found these  stories dated June 4, 2010 and Aug 3, 2010

http://citizen.typepad.com/eyesontrade/2010/08/pac-rim-cafta-challenge-of-salvadoran-environmental-mining-safety-policies-given-go-ahead-by-tribunal.html

It describes how Pac Rim, a Canadian gold mining company wants to develop a gold mining operation in El Salvador. The people in that area want an environmental study done as is per their laws. Pac Rim would not produce it so no license was given to develop the mine.

Pac Rim through some fancy foot work in the Cayman Island, registers as an American company. CAFTA law now applies to their situation. Pac Rim through the World Bank of the United Nations challenges El Salvador for damages.

On August 2nd the World Bank allows Pac Rim the right to sue, because CAFTA trumps El Salvadors laws.

This entire fiasco has resulted in lost jobs for  Americans, and poor El Salvadorians on the hook for a hundred million dollars in damages. The environment of Central  America is also at risk as local laws and ways of life will be considered void by the United Nations World Bank.

This corruption started when the agreement was first passed on August 2, 2005, and like dry rot is spreading around the world. Other such agreements, with the same injustice, have or are soon to be made with other countries. Obama during the election promised to stop this injustice and change the agreement. I have not yet been able to find any evidence of that.
