Legislating Morality

Some people are complaining that politicians don't use the word "sin."  A lot of preachers have misused the word "sin," even using it for things that are not against God's word. I had a preacher who told me that I would be sinning and God was going to kill me if I didn't accept the position of elder, which I didn't, and went on to tell me about a man he asked to be an usher who refused who died when he touched the door. Needless to say, God didn't kill me. It's probably preachers like this who have so distorted the meaning of the word "sin" that have caused the aversion to the word.

Sin, as you said, is basically what is not good for you. As Christians, we are no longer bound by the law, but we are to use good judgment. All things are lawful, but not all things are expedient. I'm not going to defend homosexuality, but I'm not going to condemn those who were born that way. I'm sure their urge to "mate" with a member of the same sex is as strong as the desire for those of us who are "straight" to mate with a member of the opposite sex. I base this on observation of gay animals I've seen in my animal rescues. The animals don't have ad campaigns and television shows telling them that being gay is the "in" thing and the thing to do.

God is against people going against their nature. I don't know for certain how God feels about those who were born gay. For those who choose to be homosexual, the bible does make some strong statements.

Romans 1:21-27

27And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Even so, we still need to remember this.

John 3:16-17

17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Gays are included in those who Jesus died for. It's not our job to condemn them to convict them. Conviction is the job of the Holy Spirit. If they're aware of the passages, it's up to them to accept or reject the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

If we make homosexuality illegal, shouldn't we also make greed, envy, lust, and everything else mentioned as sin in the bible illegal? Shouldn't the judge be one who has no sin? Good luck in finding a judge here on earth who has no sin.

The laws of the spirit weren't meant to be laws of the state. That's one of the things that Jesus tried to get across and that was part of the wisdom of the Founding Fathers in writing the 1st Amendment.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
