Pretty sure I found a guy's spine...

So two weeks ago, I found a vertebra on the beach. It looks pretty human to me and most of my family agrees. I'm taking it to my anthropology teacher who used to be a forensic anthropologist to see if it is actually human. But what I'm afraid of is that there might be some laws about which I am unaware. Like if on my way to school tomorrow I might get pulled over and have a piece of a human spinal column in my glovebox, it might look somewhat suspicious. Or should I have called the police when I found it and if it turns out that it is human, I could get into trouble.

So, does anyone know if I'm breaking any laws by having this (if it turns out to be human) and not notifying the police right away ?

UPDATE!
It was from a porpoise. thank goodness.
