Rock

While some people feel a spiritual connection to their rock, my rock is somewhat lower on the evolutionary scale. My rock is my pet rock.

If your'e looking for an easy-to-care-for companion, pet rocks may be for you. They are easy to train and very resistant to disease. Although they benefit from exercise, they do not require daily workouts.

Choosing your pet

With all the breeds available, it is important to choose one that is a good fit for your family. If your space is limited, choose one of the smaller breeds. But even if you're an apartment dweller, a well-trained pet can adapt to your space limitations.

No worries if you have a family member with allergies. Pet rocks are completely allergen free. Use caution if you have family members who are involved in any kind of a throwing sport. Windows and precious glass heirlooms can be inadvertently destroyed by indoor games of catch.

Sources of pet rocks The first place to check is an organization dedicated to animal rescue. Many people have tired of their pets or have moved and no longer have room for a pet.

You can improve the lot of these abandoned pets and feel good about adopting. The advantage of using this source is that the pets will already be spayed or neutered, and will be vaccinated against rock pox. Be sure to check for signs of abuse before deciding on a pet. Common indicators are chips or markings from crayons or permanent markers. Not to be confused with tattoos that artistic owners have applied to give individuality to their pet.

Since many pets have escaped into the wild, you may be able to locate a feral rock. If you have the patience, you can domesticate a feral pet. You need have no fears that it will turn on you.

Nutrition & Health

Pet rocks have very simple nutritional needs. They are able to obtain sustenance from air and water, and the natural oils found in your hands. So be sure to play regularly with your pet to give her access to needed nutrition. Some people like to leave their pets out all night so they can drink in the morning dew. However, this can be a dangerous practice as they will develop cold sweats in the morning, which could lead to cracking or infestations of mildew.

Take your pet to your local rockatarian for vaccinations and yearly examinations. They are highly susceptible to moss, which can be minimized by rolling.

Training

Even if you're not good with animals, you can successfully train your pet rock. It responds well to the commands, Sit, and Stay. With more practice and a bit of your help, you can also teach them to roll over. Do not frustrate your pet by expecting too much. Teach only one command at a time. Reward success with a treat. They especially enjoy a fresh water bath.

Exercise and socializing

Your pet will love to spend time with your family. Be sure to include him or her in family activities. Their exercise needs are minimal, but you will benefit as much as your rock from regular outings in the fresh air and sunshine.

Breeding

If you are fortunate to locate a good breeding pair, you may be able to successfully develop your own strain of rocks. The female has a strong maternal instinct, so she will provide most of the care for the young pebbles.

Straying rocks

Although pet rocks are not as popular as they once were, they still run the risk of rocknapping. Watch your rock carefully when in crowded public places. If you go to a rock park, make sure you keep it on a leash.

You may want to consider imbedding a GPS chip. At the very least, equip your valued pet with a collar and ID tag with your name and contact information. Take a picture so you can prove ownership if your pet is lost or stolen. Fingerprinting has been less successful in the retrieval of lost pets.

Safety

Consider the safety of those around you. If your pet is up-to-date on his or her shots, there should be little danger of passing on rabies or tetanus. The biggest danger is that someone will throw your pet. Particularly if someone in the vicinity provokes an incident by casting the first stone.

Finally, use extreme caution around water. While rocks enjoy water baths, they have a deathly fear of large bodies of water. They are incapable of learning to swim or rock paddle. A pet rock in water will very likely be lost forever. It will sink like a drowned rat.

Enjoy a long relationship with your pet

With the proper care, your pet rock can be expected to live forever. This is not just a decision for you, as a pet owner. This is a commitment by your whole family and your heirs to provide for the ongoing needs of your pet. Just like parrots, a pet rock will often outlive its owner. Learning how to care for a pet rock is the most significant thing you can do for the quality of your pets life and your own.
