Shameful Shit I Enjoy

Okay....so earlier I came clean about my comic book collection/obsession in Rockface's blog. (He had a point; where are all the readers???) I know it made me seem a little less awesome than I am....but sadly there's more to me that will lessen my factor of awesomeness by at least ten awesome-points. We all have stupid little obsessions and hobbies that we don't tell anyone about. In the spirit of sharing, I'm going to tell you people the somewhat embarassing things I enjoy. Since we've covered comic books, we'll quietly move on to the others.

Please don't judge me lest ye be judge. (I think that was a quote by Jesus or Eddie Murphy or something...)

Operetta: Yeah, I rock out to good musical shit (Oasis, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, David Bowie, Arcade Fire, Social Distortion, Johnny Cash, Dropkick Murphys, etc) but my true musical love has always been the opera. Operetta is a lighter version of the traditional opera...less dark and brooding and more theatre-ish.  My favorites include "H.M.S. Pinafore", "Pirates Of Penzance", "Die Fledermaus" (---'the bat'---), "Les Deux Aveugles"......and so on. It's really relaxing and nice to listen to after a hard day of getting shit on by the public. Straight-up opera is okay, too, just a little too dark for my tastes. When I'm feeling all Evil Clark from 'Superman III' (sweet reference, huh?) I like "Tosca", "The Minotaur" and (One you all know without actually knowing you did) "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff. Check that one out, non-believers!

Shitty Movies: Big surprise! The Big Bad likes bad movies! (Did the Bruce Campbell avatar throw you off??) It's one thing to like crap films; its another to seek them out and buy them. Shitters from the 80s and early 90s are fond in my memory, so I look for those first. "Garbage Pail Kids: The Movie", "Howard The Duck", "Over The Top", "Ishtar" are a few that I've picked up in the past few months. "Plan 9 From Outer Space", "The Phantom Creeps", "Monster A Go-Go", "Santa Claus Fights The Martians", "Harry And The Hendersons", "The Wizard", "Cool As Ice".....yeah; I suck. AND I paid good money for these stinkers.

80s Cartoons And Memorabilia: (Is that spelled right? It looks wrong...hmm.) I grew up watching this stuff and playing with the heavily merchandised toys that came with the shows. I still have my original Teddy Ruxpin that talked with the tapes in my closet......for the kid, of course. (Mint condition; classy!!) I'll scoop-up DVDs or bad convert jobs (re:bootlegs) whenever I find them. I loved those shows! "My Pet Monster", "Silverhawks", "Beetlejuice", "Real  Ghostbusters", M.A.S.K.", "Pirates Of Dark Water", "Brave Starr", "Captain Caveman", "Thundercats", "Bucky O'Hare"....and a special shout-out for my sister...."Jem" and "SheRa". I've picked up odds-and-ends of the figures from these shows on eBay and other places. It's fun to actally hold those things again and remember how great toys used to be to a kid. You can get them for crazy cheap, but the condition is always different. As long as it doesn't smell like pee, I'll stock it away with the other forgotten relics of childhood.

Matchbooks: I've got thousands upon thousands of matchbooks in three giant glass holder-thingies for reasons unknown even to me. Whenever I stay in a hotel, go to another city, visit a strange shop or see a unique looking one, it comes home and joins it match-y friends in the bin. I shudder to think that one day, they will probably be the leading cause in the house-fire that kills me. Until then....yeah....matchbooks. Odd.

Records From The 40s: This collection was started because (1) My grandpa kicked the bucket, and (2) he had a basement full of the stuff! I've purchased very few since taking the king's ransom of 78s from his place(only six in the past eight years), but the few I've managed to track down have not disappointed me. There are classics, like Johnny Mercer, The Mills Brothers, Judy Garland, Benny Goodman, Fats Waller and Les Paul. There are also ones I've never heard of before....and never thought would have been made in the '30s and '40. There are collections of old war songs on trumpet, old speeches from long-dead politicians the names of which I don't recognize, anti-German propeganda records, and some cock named Liptint or Lyptint or something like that. (He sucks.) Hard to find; impossible to listen to; still cool in my books. A-1! Outta sight!

Midget Porn: Yeah....like you don't find it crazy-weird enough to watch? Fuckin' liars.

Yup. So that's me. Collector of stupid shit....except for that midget one. That was just for shits and giggles. (Or was it.....?) I'd love to hear some of the things you guys feel shame for collecting or taking part in. I'm hoping one of you out there still goes to great lengths to find POGS, but that's pretty unlikely. (POGS suck.) I hope this doesn't change your perception on how awesome I am. We've all got shameful hobbies; I just chose to be the first one to air them. Now, follow suit!! I wanna see comments or (better yet) your own blogs of shameful enjoyments. Go forth and spread the shit!

Oh.....and a special message for Killerisme: Don't be disappointed; I am who I am.

Cheers,

-The Big Bad
