It's ashame the way pop culture has gone.

In my opinion pop culture today is mindless compared to what it used to be. If you watch, listen, or look at anything pre-90's it is usually more creative and talented than most of the stuff coming out today whether it be music, movies, art, so on and so forth (although the 80's were like half crap half good).

Take for example rock music. Rock music used to actually take some effort to preform successfully, there was actual playing involved as well as a thought out image (usually). Now adays bands are getting famous based on the mere fact that they destroy their insturments; they arent even playing anything remotley talented or good! Rap and hip-hop are another good example. Rap was originally thought out, had good lyrics and a lot of good messages. The beats and music were composed with thought and usually pretty inventive. Now adays it seems that rap is removing as many insturments as possible and over simplifying the music, as well as preaching about nothing more than shooting people and rims. It is sickening to me! Don't even get me started on people like Hillary Duff or whoever. They are slowly sucking all the beauty and creativity out of music.

It's not just music though, it's everything involved with pop culture. Movies used to leave things a little vague to get your imagination going. Now movies pretty much show everything because no one wants to use their own creative mind. TV is just an abomination of itself in my opinion. Instead of sitting down and thinking of something entertaining they stick 20 people on an island, then see who can cheat and do the most puzzles to win haha. Piles of twisted scrap metal are being screwed together, welded to a base, given a name and called art. I call that uncreative and ordinary.

Obviously pop culture is a reflection of society. I personally find it tragic that people are becoming less creative and imaginative; why lower your standards even if IT IS only entertainment? Don't get me wrong I enjoy watching a guy fall down an escalator in a wheel chair as much as the next person. However maybe where I differ is I don't view that as valid creativity. Now adays instead of people going out side and living their own lives they watch someone on TV go outside and live vicariously through them. Perhaps that is why people need to see every detail in a movie. Of course I don't feel this way about everything in pop culture today, there is a lot of good stuff, but I feel most of it is garbage. I hope that other people feel the same way, and will pick up an insturment, be in a play in highschool, go outside and building something, paint a picture, or just sit back and watch the clouds.

*Update*- I don't know if people will continue to read this blog but just in case I'd like to make the following point: All my opinions expressed in this blog are to do with my own experiences as a musician, and also my observations in other forms of media. Further more I feel that this mentality is mainly an american problem, when I watch foreign films, or listen to foreign bands I usually see some creativity and talent regardless of whether I like it or not. However I'm sure that other countries are doing the same, but it seems to be less acceptable.
