Power of Prayer

OK first let me start this Blog by saying that I believe in a creator. I call him God and associate most closely with the Christian God. I believe Jews Muslims and Christians all worship the same God in different forms and I think they all got it a little wrong (That's a whole different Blog). Now that that has been said listen to this...

Today I heard one of those crazy bible thumping Christians say that they prayed and God spoke to them. I believe this thinking to be the highest form of arrogance among Christians and here's why:

God does not answer prayers. You do! And even as great as you think you are, you are NOT God!

I believe in daily prayer (some would call it meditation) but not in the same way that many Christians do. When I ask for the solution to a problem in prayer I am in truth searching inside myself for an answer I already know. How do I approach this situation and come out with my Christian values in tact? That's why I get annoyed with people who pray for $1,000,000 or to be famous. I truly believe that God helps those who help themselves. Instead pray for a way to make money and get off your butt and do something about it.

It also bothers me when people say that they prayed that a family member wouldn't die and they did, proving God doesn't exist. Everyone dies. God can't stop it and I doubt he would if he could. Once again it is arrogance to believe you know better than God who gave us life.

The serenity prayer is in my mind has been the most powerful meditation for me personally dealing with the death of loved ones:

God, give us grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things which should be changed and the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.

Back to my point, If something in that crazy little head of yours told you that God hates gays or Muslims or cross-dressers or movie stars realize it's just you talking to yourself. Those are your thoughts, not God's. It is arrogance to think you can talk for God, an eternal being that we can never understand, because we can never truly understand the nature of his existence which is in eternity.

Anyways this is getting a bit long and I thank those of you who took the time to read this. These are my thoughts. I could be full of it. Tell me what you think. Just please don't talk for God!
