37! My girlfriend sucked 37 dicks!
All of the Clerks fans out there know what I'm talking about. Am I right?
So if you don't know, there is a scene in Clerks where Dante's girlfriend reveals to him that, up to and including him, she has sucked 37 dicks. That is followed by one of the funniest scenes in the movie, where she walks out and Dante follows her, screaming "Try not to suck any dick on the way to the parking lot", and a random guy standing on the sidewalk raises his eyes and follows after her.
So what's my point?
My point is, when the movie finally became a cult classic, Kevin Smith finally got some cash for another movie, and a toy company finally decided to immortalize the guys in resin, the "inaction" figures sold for $9.37. $9 because they were overpriced, and 37 in what may be the biggest coup in toy history, an overt reference to sucking dick. The number was reinforced by ToyFare magazine, which publishes a toy price guide every month. The stated value of the Clerks figures was, of course, $9.37.
But that's my point either. My point is really that every day, at least once, sometimes twice, I look at the clock and see 9:37. This morning, when I finally decided to get my fat ass out of bed, the clock said 9:37. Doesn't matter where I am, at some point I will look at a clock, a counter, the DVD player, something, anything, and I will see 9:37.
Why is this? Is it just another piece of brilliant Kevin Smith humor? Did he insert subliminal 9:37 messages in his movies? Really, I think he would have been much more likely to sneak in a 4:20 here and there. No, really I think it's just a phenomenon called coincidence.
When you see a number, a word, or an image that has some kind of meaning to you, you are going to pay more attention to it than other things, either conciously or subconciously. I could drive 37 city blocks (see what I did there?) and only one house would stand out to me, the one whose address is 937. I could look at a display of clocks at Target and the one that said 9:37 is the one that would catch my eye.
For years now my dad has done the same thing. His number is 417. Why he chose 417, or 417 chose him, I don't know, but we see it all the time. It even stands out to me since he makes such a big deal out of it. We've seen it on clocks, in stores, on tv, everywhere. I don't think I can tell my dad about 9:37 though. We just don't talk about that kind of stuff.
So I guess I'm wondering if anybody else has this "gift", and if you know where your number came from.
Also, I have a second number, though it doesn't come up as often. My other number is 1138. I would like to offer eRep points, but at least I can offer some kudos to anyone that can identify where 1138 comes from. Happy hunting!
