Time Wasters, Beer Chasers, And An Interesting Stroll

So I've spent the last three or four hours doing sweet fuck all. I have the next few days off (a rarity in my books) so I decided to piss about and not do anything remotely close to productive.

With a 12-pack at my ready, a huge pitcher of Kool-Aid in the fridge, and all 10 seasons of Stargate, I decided to sit down and have an all out dork fest in all the glory that is time-off from work. I watched a few random episodes from the series, drank beer, and did my best to finish off the Kool-Aid. (Beer followed by a half-cup of the sugary mess is a strange combonation that seems to work quite nicely.)

I only drank about four beers...I've got shit to do tomorrow....and grew tired of the show, so I decided to do something a little out of sorts for the winter season and went for a walk around the neighbourhood. We moved into this neighbourhood about a month ago, and I hadn't really made the effort to check out the areas surrounding us. One in the morning is probably not the best time to "take in the sights", but it helped me to work out the alcohol and sugar slowly creating a firebomb in my belly.

I bundled up in a warm coat and hat, gloves and a thick pair of boots, then headed outside. It was a nice night, despite the cold, cold air mass that had moved in this afternoon. (Current temperature shows -18 degrees celcius.) I walked up toward the grocery store at the top of the street, passing many unlit and sleepy homes along my way. It's quite nice to get out and walk, as most of my time is spent driving from place to place or sitting at a desk. Its been a while since I'd enjoyed a liesurely stroll for no reason other than to be outside.

I found out a lot about my new neighbourhood. Apparently, one of my neighbours does this same ritual every night (I ran into him shortly down the road), there is an awesome footpath no more than a three minute stroll from my front door, and the city's homeless tend to flock to the area once the clock hits eleven. (I probably gave out six cigarettes to some rather cold looking bums.) I looked at lawns and front decks, still-standing Christmas decorations and lights, and the general architecture of the area. I saw cars parked in driveways, kid's toys left on the front lawn to collect snow, and a crazy old woman who looked like she was conducting an orchestra in her underpants infront of her living room window. It was a pretty decent trip, until the cold set in deeper and my frozen toes forced me back home. I had been walking for about a half an hour, so the trip back was the slightest bit uncomfortable. (Cigarettes helped.)

While attempting to warm my feet and finish off the rest of the Kool-Aid, it dawned on me that at my previous place, never once did I get out and see the neighbourhood that I didn't pass on my way home from work. I'm thinking of making this a nightly event, work or not. It was quite the interesting little learning experience. How often do we take our surrounding for granted and don't stop to have a good look around where we live? I know its something that's never really registered high on my list of priorities, but now I wish it had. I found out that below the roadway i drive over twice a day there is a creek running beneath it, the formentioned footpath that leads to god-knows where, the deli tucked away in the corner of a lot up at the top of the street, et cetera et cetera. Interesting stuff to discover about your surroundings. Well, interesting to me, at least.

I suggest you all go out and do the same one day. Don't just walk around the area you live in, really take it in. The sights, smells, and hidden bits and pieces that most people would never see in their day to day travels. It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be; maybe you'll find some interesting shit out too.

That's it for me. My feet are numb and the sound of Richard Dean Anderson issuing orders is stuck in my noggin, so I must be off to bed soon. Goodnight to all. Thanks for making it this far down the blog...unless you skipped right to the bottom and didn't read the paragraphs...lazy cock-bag.

Cheers,
