I try to stay out of the political stuff but sometimes I just have to speak up.
New York Times Oct 16, 2009
State Senator Hiram Monserrate, a freshman Democrat and former police officer and city councilman, was found guilty on Thursday of misdemeanor assault, but escaped a felony conviction for slicing his companions face during a bitter argument in his Queens apartment on Dec. 19, 2008.This is the tagline that introduced an article about the attack by a New york state Senator on his girllfriend. he cut her face with a glass, dragged her through their apartment lobby, drove her to a hospital over 1/2 hour away, and because his victim re-canted her statements made at the hospital got off virtually scott free. Alright, lets start here. Ladies, if ANY person lays hands on you in a violent fashion DO NOT think it was a mistake...It Wasn't. DO NOT think it was an isolated incident... It won't be. Do NOT forgive him or her LEAVE AS fast as You can! Finslly PRESS CHARGES With that being said this douchbag of a politician because he was only convicted of a misdemeanor charge of recklessly causing physical injury still has the opportunity to continue working as as state senator. (see below)
Mr. Monserrate, 42, faces up to a year in jail for the misdemeanor conviction, but he had faced up to seven years in prison on each felony count and would have had to surrender his Senate seat, with the prospect of a new Albany stalemate during a state budget crisis. The Senate is now controlled by the Democrats, who have a slim 32-to-30 margin.
Mr. Monserrate, who remains free on $5,000 bail, is to be sentenced on Dec. 4; it is unclear if he can or will remain in office if he is sent to jail.
Unclear? Who makes these decisions? Aren't there laws in place for this kind of thing? (moral turpitude, appropriate conduct etc) What the fuck is wrong with New York and our society in general if an (almost guaranteed) woman beater can keep his political job but others have to resign for cheating on their wives.
Jesus Christ is this the end of times or what? I just don't get it.
Sorry about the rant but some things stick in my craw.
