What we don't speak of

There is something common and justified that goes on every single human day about two hundred thousand times. It is a controversial act, one that is hard won for sure. There are those that would kill over it's comission. It was a dificult battle to make it acceptable. And yet, this act spares the world great harm. It saves lives, both literally and conceptually, it relieves burdens, it ensures the hungry will be fed, it prevents great suffering. Some think that it creates suffering but they are greatly misguided. There are many things that take innoscent life, many of them integral in this culture's functioning, and this is not one of them. The life it ends does not and can not suffer whatsoever. In fact the life will be spared suffering by ending when it should, before it can ever feel or think. This is not human life, it is not even animal life, it is simply an organism as irrelevant as bacteria, a tumor, an ameoba.

Perhaps it is for fear of harm, but this act is not spoken of. In context when in fiction it might be releveant it is ignored as if it never existed. When giving advice it is not considered. We do not speak of it. We pretend that only other people do this. Because of this stigma we attach to it, we bring great harm into this world. We allow hunger, pain, and great burdens because we have made this act taboo. This act that is as a savior to so many. I for one don't understand why.
