Waer! Women's Rights Hero!
This is one area where the ideologies of birth control and abortion was born and championed from.
Margaret Sanger the founder of Planned Parenthood is a hero to the Pro-choice supporters and women rights advocates. Originally not a supporter of abortions due to the possible damage it could do to the mother, did support it when procedures and methods became safer. Do you also know she was a eugenicist who believed in selective breeding controlled by the state?
Here is a private letter she wrote:
"We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We don't want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population. and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members." Margaret Sanger's December 19, 1939 letter to Dr. Clarence Gamble, 255 Adams Street, Milton, Massachusetts. Original source: Sophia Smith Collection, Smith College, North Hampton, Massachusetts. Also described in Linda Gordon's Woman's Body, Woman's Right: A Social History of Birth Control in America. New York: Grossman Publishers, 1976.
This "hero" of women's rights advocated family planning clinics on every block in black neighborhoods.
Her thoughts on human development were also laden with racism:
It is said that a fish as large as a man has a brain no larger than the kernel of an almond. In all fish and reptiles where there is no great brain development, there is also no conscious sexual control. The lower down in the scale of human development we go the less sexual control we find. It is said that the aboriginal Australian the lowest known species of the human family, just a step higher than the chimpanzee in brain development, has so little sexual control that police authority alone prevents him from obtaining sexual satisfaction on the streets.
For her, masturbation was not just a physical act, it was a mental state:
In the boy or girl past puberty, we find one of the most dangerous forms of masturbation, i.e., mental masturbation, which consists of forming mental pictures, or thinking obscene or voluptuous pictures. This form is considered especially harmful to the brain, for the habit becomes so fixed that it is almost impossible to free the thoughts from lustful pictures.
So where is the principle, "it's my body I can do what I want with it", here?
This "hero" wanted women to have sex as much as they wanted using contraceptives, but don't touch yourself to relieve sexual tension.
Despite all her work, the fact her thinking is now main stream, contraception is widely used all over the world, abortion is accepted in most countries and in some countries there are limits on how many children you can have, the human population growth is considered out of control and a huge problem.
Why does this conundrum exist? In my humble opinion it exists, because our basic principles and values are incorrect. Our foundations to solve the problem are not well grounded and their philosophies are completely wrong. Today's principles of human population control started in the 1920's, with very poor results and yet the more draconian principles of eugenics are now starting to become acceptable to most people.
If a human population problem exists, and I'm not sure if it does, then we need to change our model, because this one just isn't working!
