The Bird is the Word.

History is full of blunders and scientific misunderstandings. Hitler believed a master race of humans could be achieved through selective breeding and the elimination of weaker classes of beings, especially the Jews, Africans, disabled and people of low intelligence. He had many supporters in his early times and was even Man of the Year in Time Magazine. Of course, we all know what happened to his regime.

There was a man who was ten times more successful than Hitler and no one dared to stop him or thought a need to, his campaigns and policies resulted in the deaths of seventy million people.  This Man was known as Chairman Mao Zedong, he ruled China with an iron fist and his people loved him.

In one campaign known as Kill the Sparrow Campaign, he ordered the citizens of China to kill as many sparrows as they could. Due to a powerful incentive, known as the Chinese Red Army, the citizenry enthusiastically pursued the birds. They would literally chase the birds day after day, until the birds were so tired, they would fall to the ground in exhaustion. After which the Chinese people would lash them together, collected them by the millions into the back of dump trucks. The birds would then be disposed of.

The thinking by the scientist at that time was that sparrows ate grain and if they could eliminate the sparrows, grain production would increase. However, the main diet of sparrows was actually locusts. In a few years the locust devastated the crops and more than thirty million people starved to death as a result.

I know, that is all ancient history now since it happened between 1958 and 1962.  Most people don't give a shit about this kind of thing and wont care or learn by it. There is one huge problem, at this time, if we ignore this history, because you see, history is starting to repeat itself and most don't even realize it or pay attention to it.

The environmental movement while at first seems innocuous is full of pitfalls and blunders that could rival the mistakes of Mao Zedong's Regime. Many well educated people today actually revere Mao and his tactics ignoring the the incredible lost of human life and suffering he caused.

There is a new law that the Ontario Liberal Government is trying to pass based on the environmentalist concerns for a bird called the Bobolink Finch. It likes to nest in tall grasses and since naturally occurring tall grasses are in relatively short supply in Ontario, the environmentalist want cattle farmers to not cut their first yield of hay. The first cutting is the most nutritious and its lost would be a devastating loss to cattle farmers.

Over thirty thousand cattle farms would be put in a serious financial situation adding to an already very difficult way of life. The farmers are working hard with the government to find alternative solutions but they are a long way off.

The Bobolink habitat is a huge territory throughout Canada and identifying it as a  threatened species within Ontario is a stretch. It has found new habitat on cattle farms developed over the years in Ontario, but is really a native to areas that have a longer history of grass lands.

This type of law  mimics Mao's laws in reverse. There is no ecological need to save this bird from populating Ontario cattle farms as it is not its natural habitat. Yet such a law could potentially put thirty thousand cattle farms out of business or at least severely damage the industry based on Maoist type stupidity.
