Edits for the CIA Vision, Mission and Values.
I thought I might take it upon myself to proofread the CIA Vision, Mission and Value statement as a free public service. The original is located here:
CIA Vision, Mission & Values
Agency. One Community. An Agency unmatched in its core capabilities,
functioning as one team, fully integrated into the Intelligence
Community. ( It is well known that the different families or agencies within the intelligence community do not share information easily. Fully integrated is a pipe dream)
We are the nations first line of defense. We accomplish what others cannot accomplish and go where others cannot go. We carry out our mission by:Collecting information that reveals the plans, intentions and capabilities of our adversaries and provides the basis for decision and action. (You also collect information on your allies in the same manner)
Producing timely analysis that provides insight, warning and opportunity to the President and decisionmakers (two words, decision makers) charged with protecting and advancing Americas interests. (failed on 911 and no one was fired or reprimanded)
Conducting covert action at the direction of the President to preempt threats or achieve US policy objectives.( Implication of present and past presidents in illegal covert actions)
Service. We put Country first and Agency before self. Quiet patriotism is our hallmark. We are dedicated to the mission, and we pride ourselves on our extraordinary responsiveness to the needs of our customers. (Customers? Who are they? Corporations, industrialists, oil companies? That should read citizens)
We uphold the highest standards of conduct. We seek and speak the truth--to our colleagues and to our customers.(why the dash? Is it exclusive?) We honor those Agency officers who have come before us and we honor the colleagues with whom we work today.( Again with the "customers", please replace with "citizens". You may seek the truth, but only sometimes speak it and rarely share it, unless it brings a profit. Might explain the "customer" reference )
We hold ourselves-and each other-to the highest standards.(why the dashes?) We embrace personal accountability. We reflect on our performance and learn from that reflection. ( Personal Accountability has been overlooked on many occasions. Iran Contra and 911 are just two examples).

(Why did it take fourteen months to update after the last review?)
The Washington Post's Pulitzer-prize winning reporter Dana Priest drove another stake into the heart of the US military industrial complex in today's Post:
In June, a stone carver from Manassas chiseled another perfect star into a marble wall at CIA headquarters, one of 22 for agency workers killed in the global war initiated by the 2001 terrorist attacks.
The intent of the memorial is to publicly honor the courage of those who died in the line of duty, but it also conceals a deeper story about government in the post-9/11 era: Eight of the 22 were not CIA officers at all. They were private contractors.
