Numbers Are Evil

Here are some reasons why.

A) Scientists manipulate numbers to justify their theories or deny the theories of others whether or not the theories work in practice in the field.

B) Politicians manipulate numbers to support their particular position whether or not the formula used was valid.

C) Christians use numbers to nit-pick over lone verses without regard to the context in which the verse was given. [a]

D) Corporations manipulate numbers to give excuses why they can't afford to give their employees the pay or benefits they deserve and to avoid paying taxes which support the infrastructure which made them rich as they post record profits.

E) Numbers are used to drive superstitions and create fear.

F)  Numbers drive some people crazy, especially those labeled with OCD.

G) Numbers are used to imply that something is a fact when it may not really be.  (Millions of people believe that the earth is flat while only a couple scientists say it isn't)[b]

H) Numbers are used to show how valueless your posts are on Ebaum's World. *snicker*

I) Numbers just plain suck!

Footnotes:

a. Biblical references Psalm 93:1, 96:10, and 1 Chronicles 16:30 were used to prove that the earth was flat and couldn't rotate around the sun because they include text stating that "the world is firmly established, it cannot be moved." In the same manner, Psalm 104:5 says, "the Lord set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved." Further, Ecclesiastes 1:5 states that "And the sun rises and sets and returns to its place" etc.

b.  Copernicus was very hesitant to give the church his idea and never officially proposed the idea to them, but he wrote a book in 1514 but was afraid to publish it.

In In 1533, Johann Albrecht Widmannstetter theorized and summarized Copernicus' work and gave it to the church himself.

On 1 November 1536, Archbishop of Capua Nicholas Schönberg wrote a letter to noting of his knowledge and experience and wished Copernicus' to show his theory.

In connection with the Galileo affair, Copernicus' book was suspended until corrected by the Index of the Catholic Church in 1616 and Copernicus complied (to avoid prosecution).

Galileo was ordered to stand trial on suspicion of heresy in 1633.
