Some Quotes to Remember

In today's society where there is increasing pressure for everyone to conform to the same mold, here are a couple quotes that you might want to remember.  Most of you are probably familiar with them, but sometimes we need reminders.

"If a man loses pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured, or far away." ~ Henry David Thoreau

Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. ~ Dr. Seuss

You opinion isn't the only one.  Opinions are like assholes.  Everybody has one.

Some of us intentionally choose not to conform to what others expect of us.  We can be plain and truthful and still keep 'em guessing because we've read wide sources of materials, traveled to other countries, participated in international student exchange programs, and generally did what we could to broaden our horizons.  We may find some things funny that the more reserved might find shocking.  We may have ideas that are beyond the understanding of the less traveled.  This doesn't make us better.  It just makes us more aware.

I've seen the attitudes of those who were afraid to leave their own small community.  They're generally fearful of anything they don't understand.  Some of them didn't have the means to travel and some of them were simply too afraid.

Some people travel just to stay at a fancy resort and get away from it all.  While I did that somewhat on occasion, after a day or two of nothing but fun and relaxation, I liked to go out and see how the people of the country really lived and see what problems they faced.  That generally involved sweet talking a female activity director into going against the rules of the expensive resorts.  As a result, I learned some interesting facts and customs.

If you travel to a foreign country, don't go with preconceived ideas.  Be friendly and respectful to your hosts, hostesses, and activity directors.  Keep your eyes open and keep your mouth shut unless you need to inquire about something.  Try not to act too much like a tourist.  Listen, learn, and ask questions that are relevant to what you are being shown and told.  You'll generally find the people more receptive to talking to you if you do.

Going to a new website is somewhat like traveling to a foreign country.  Each site has its own customs and own problems.  Some of them are similar to the problems on other sites, but each site has its unique set of individuals who dominate the site.  Most of them have some of the same individuals who are bent on causing problems on as many sites as possible, as well.  You're going to make some mistakes, but those you will have to live with.  Eventually, you will find or make your place in the community and either be loved or hated for it.  The main thing I would say is be yourself, regardless of what others want you to be.

If you're only concerned about how many eBones you make and how many views you get, then by all means, start fights, write crappy blogs that have no depth of meaning, and be sure to insult everyone you come across; however, if you want to be taken seriously, try putting a little thought behind what you write.
