Pull Up Bar, Going Down!

chinup_bar.jpg

Just a public service announcement here. If you are using this piece of exercise equipment or are planning to, then read on, otherwise it's not relevant.

OK, bought this for my son at his request, installed it as designed and right away I knew this thing was dangerous. I suppose if you have some five inch chunky molding as shown in the above photograph it will hold, but in most new homes that piece of trim is a flimsy two and half inches of MDF held in place by no more than six tiny pin nails.

If you want to install one of these then drill two holes through the tubing where the framing header is located and install two,  three and a half inch screws. Where the pull up bar intersects the upright framing members do the same. This will securely attach the pull up bar avoiding serious injury.

I'm six foot two and after doing this my head clears a standard eighty inch height door opening with the device in place.

Play safe!
