Two men and one woman died this weekend trying to save their children from drowning in Quebec's Wapishish River.

Two boys, aged 6 and 8, were playing with a toy duck just before 6 p.m. Saturday night on the edge of the river, located in the provinces northeastern Saguenay region.

The children got into trouble when they waded too far into the water to retrieve the toy, according to Quebec provincial police.

The boys fathers, who were also brothers, went in to try and rescue the children.

The older boy was safely returned to shore, then the men returned to the water to try to save the other boy.

"The other one was in trouble the father was unable to take his son and bring him on the beach," Sgt. Hélène Nepton of the Sûreté du Québec told CBC News.

The mother of the younger child also went into the water to help.

Another woman came with life jackets and rescued the boy, but the three adults disappeared into the river.

The woman was found unconscious on the bank Saturday night and died a short time later. The men's bodies were recovered Sunday morning. All three were from Chicoutimi.

Police are still investigating the incident.
