My Cat Dilemma

A  couple of months ago my children asked if we could adopt a cat from the Humane Society. They sighted good care, regular baths and lots of love for our dog as proof of their devotion and responsibility to animals. So, not one to deny reward to responsible children, I accepted. We chose a fluffy white female with blue eyes, very timid yet quite cuddly when she gets to know you.  We paid a King's ransom for all the shots, RFID chip, spaying, licensing and paperwork. But, it was a great addition to the family and we all love her, even the dog. I think they make fun of us when we are gone.

The cat was exhibiting signs of pregnancy. My wife and kids not knowing, just thought it was some malady. I thought different and brought the cat to the vet. Another $100. Turns out she is indeed pregnant. I approached the Humane Society and they denied any wrong doing and now she is my full responsibility.  I asked for at least a refund for some of my fees, but they made me feel like an asshole for asking since their problems are far greater than my own.

I can't even imagine my children's dismay if we carry those kittens to term and give them away. I really don't want to deal with a pregnant cat. From my own experiences there is a chance she won't care for them or in the least neglect the runt.

With time running out, I consulted with the vet, she can perform an abortion for five hundred dollars and dispose of the unwanted kittens in a humane way. She has also offered to "properly" spay the cat free of charge. Personally, I don't support abortions, but these are kittens.

What are your thoughts?
