Here is why I Dont Like Facebook

Some people say they use Facebook because

Because everyone is on it, I have to use it!

For this same reason I dislike Facebook and do not want to use it anymore.

I dont know why I have people from High School or Family Members I dont talk with often as friends. Not only is the minutiae of my waking life probably boring to them it might also be shocking.

Giving your extended family or co-workers (past or present) too much insight into your aquarium is well known to be a bad idea in real life, and so it is also on Facebook.

I like my Philosophy BBS forum because its comprised of only people with an interest in Philosophy. I enjoy Reddits /R/Libertarian sub-Reddit because I can read news stories and comment about the state of Libertarian ideas with other well-informed and intelligent people. I can be a raving proponent of Straussian Economics on /r/Libertarian and then go back to my Philosophy BBS and wonder whether money and power corrupt humans souls.

I like dive bars because I can sometimes find a good conversation there and dont pay 800% markup on a beer.

Facebook has done a wonderful job of creating an application that feeds into humans need for personal recognition and a feeling of awareness about others around then, and not much more.

There is a short story by Kurt Vonnegut is his newly released book, the story is titled Confido. Its about an engineer who works for a hearing aid company who was able to create the ultimate invention that will earn him a cool billion. Its a best friend in a box, and it has something to do with the way your ears and brain are hooked up. The Confido is a box that reassures you of why you are right and your thoughts and feelings are correct. At first the inventor had the Confido fitted with a small speaker but later opted for an earbud, for obvious reasons. Of course, the Confido causes some mischief in Vonneguts story but ultimately you realize that everyone already has a built in Confido in their brain.

I think users on Facebook tend to try to make Facebook an extension of their internal Confidos, and other than that, just try to share boring life details or thoughts in an attention power grab.

Im guilty of it and so are you. After you read this, you should be cured.
Watching your friends and acquaintances on Facebook is a bit like watching a long-form documentary about Farming. While you dont know all of the specifics and details about either, you can kind of figure how it all goes down.

The details you learn about your friends ideas, lives and events are not surprising:

Clever people say clever thingsDumb people say dumb thingsHip people go to hip eventsBoring peoples lives are boringGood looking people take nice photos of themselvesRich people do and own expensive thingsFat people eat a lot
