Recurring Nightmare
I occasionally have a rather peculiar dream. It's slowly been occurring more often than not. In said dream, I could be anywhere. I recognize the environment, but I can never seem to find my way home. I could walk past it and not recognize it. I'm compelled elsewhere.
In said dream, I'm followed by a shadow of myself. Although he has no features and is silent as the night, he has rather piercing white eyes. Sometimes, he is directly behind me mimicking my every step as a shadow should. Other times, I notice the bright eyes on the horizon as he stalks me from afar. Either way, he's there. Or perhaps IT.. unsure what to refer to it as.
Oddly enough though, he seems to carry a sladgehammer with him. Upon viewing it, it's rather worn. The handle has obvious grip marks on it while the iron head of the it appears to have many indentations on it. Obvious use has been put into it.
As I walk around my environment for whatever unknown reason, I come across animals that seem to be able to speak the english language. Most just pass by casually, but many question me, asking me what I'm doing, and why I'm doing it... I return the same question without an answer nearly every time. We both walk past each other as if nothing happened.
In the meantime, the shadow behind me grows. I can feel it's emotion feeding on me. I establish that it isn't a friendly being. I call out for help but nobody appears to me. I continue walking for fear of stopping and being caught my this shadow, but I also fear running to provoke it.
No matter what happens in this dream though, I always happen upon a field. There is always a scarecrow in the very dead center of the field. It's making no progress in keeping birds away as they are perched on it's shoulders.
At this point, the shadow behind me approaches the scarecrow and attacks it with it's sledgehammer. It's now much larger than I remember. I do nothing but watch as it destroys this scarecrow with no remorse. It then turns towards me, and simply leans onto the sledgehammer, as he uses it as a crutch. I try to scream, but nothing comes out. As I scream, as does this creature, and I wake up from that every time.
