Canadians getting their freak on

Nearly 10% of Canadians confess to sex in a canoe, 22% to threesomes in new survey

Almost a quarter of sexually active Canadians say they've been involved in a threesome a some point â with 29% saying they'd be open to the idea.

Canadians say they've been involved in a threesome a some point â with 29% saying they'd be open to the idea.

Threeâs company for millions of Canadians, with more than one in five sexually active adults â 22% â saying theyâve done the deed with two or more partners at the same time, and another 29% saying theyâre open to the idea.

The admissions are among the risqué revelations uncovered by Playtex and Environics Research Group in a new nationwide sex survey that pulls back the sheets on where we do it, who we do it with, and how often. The results collectively confirm that when it comes to intimacy, the True North is indeed strong and (very) free.

Josey Vogels is an expert on sexuality, having explored the topic for more than 20 years as an author and advice columnist. Her new instruction manual is called Better Sex in No Time: A Guide for Busy Couples, and the Ontario-based writer gave the Postâs Ben Kaplan 34.5 ways to increase the heat in this January cold.

1. Open your eyes.
2. Hold hands. You wouldnât run a marathon if you havenât worn your running shoes in a year, just like you shouldnât expect great sex if you arenât keeping the physical somehow in reach. Touch each other â itâs nice.
3. Send a sexy text: âJust thinking about the way your back curves into your bum.â Send warm fuzzies any time of the day â even when youâre apart.
4. Take an extra 30 seconds and put on a little show before taking off your clothes.
5. Basically, put in the effort. People complain they donât want to work at relationships. How would your boss feel if you felt that way about your job?

âThereâs a stigma about Canadians being somewhat reserved,â said Sohana Samanta, brand manager for Playtex feminine care.

âBut some of the greatest findings in this survey speak to the fact that Canadians are a lot more adventurous and sexually uninhibited than we believed ⦠I mean, 8% of Canadians have had sex in a canoe.â

This light-hearted approach to intimacy is reflected in the brandâs controversial new marketing campaign for Fresh Sexy wipes, currently being rolled out nationwide. The cheeky ads, which some publications have refused to run, varyingly feature images of a peach, a beaver, a door knob and a woodpecker, with carnal double-entendre slogans to match.

âItâs obviously edgy,â said Samanta, noting that some magazines would only run teasers of the full advertisements. âWeâre trying to capitalize on what weâve found out about sexually active Canadians.â

The survey certainly shows weâre hardly prudes when it comes to matters of lust.

The average person has had 12 sexual partners in their lifetime, while 23% of men and 13% of women claim 20 or more lovers. Bedpost notches climb with age, but not everyone is spreading the love: fully 17% of Canadians say theyâve been sexually monogamous with a single person.

When asked how often they have sex, 35% of people said a few times a month, while 33% said a few times a week. Married Canadians were more likely to cite the former, while dating Canadians were more likely to cite the latter.

Nearly one in five (19%) claimed to do it once a month or less, while 8% said they got busy every day. The remainder either werenât getting any or preferred not to answer.

Just 13% of Canadians said they liked morning sex, while a scant 5% were into afternoon delights. Half preferred to keep their intimate moments to the evening, while the rest said any time was go time.

Geographically, Ontario, Alberta and Quebec boasted the most satisfied lovers (âveryâ or âsomewhatâ), while those in B.C. and Atlantic Canada were likeliest to have complaints.

A spokesman for Environics, which conducted the research, says due diligence was done to ensure the results were reliable â even if some findings may be surprising.

âI donât personally know anyone whoâs had sex in a canoe, or even how youâd go about that,â said senior research associate Sean Copeland, laughing. âBut I do know canoe usage is quite high in North America.â

The online survey of 1,003 adults, aged 18 to 49, was taken Dec. 19 to 20. The results are weighted to reflect the population and no margin of error is stated.
