What Ever Happened to the Cool Black People?

As a child growing up in middle class suburbia black people were rather rare to me. The ones I knew were just like us. They went to the same schools, they wore the same clothes and they lived in  houses just like ours. I had a black grade eight teacher, who to this day I swear was the greatest teacher that ever lived. Rivaling even Jesus.

In the media black people had a place in our hearts from Sammy Davis Junior to George Clinton. Sure they were black but they were as loved as Jerry Lewis and John F. Kennedy. Anyone of them would be welcomed into our homes without hesitation.

We all adored Bill Cosby, from children to grandfathers, we all would gather round to watch his performances. Tasteful, considerate, insightful but still funny. Magic.

From the music industry we had soulful music. The musicians had class, artistic talent and dignity. The ladies had beauty but didn't  display it like a roasted chicken with only a string to accentuate their charms.

There are, and will always be exceptional black people, but the media and society, with the cooperation of many black people have taken them back a couple of steps. I don't know why this has happened, especially in the US, but it pisses me off.

We complain about how we abuse our resources, the trees, the water and the air. Yet a people who in your ghettos, who's culture is disintegrating is ignored and is allowed to rot.
I leave you with some of what I believe are what real black people have to offer.

This is for Tomlet.

Love your brother!
