Ah, Hardin County.  This place has some history.  From the African American Cemetaries Forum:

"Hardin County, Texas is partially adjacent to and southwest of Jasper Texas. A black man, James Byrd, Jr. was dragged to his death June 7, 1998. This area of Texas is well known for the KKK or their mindset."

I found this story on CNN.

JASPER, Texas (CNN) -- Three white men were indicted Monday on capital murder charges in the death of a black man who was chained to a pickup truck and dragged to his death on a rural East Texas road in early June.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with Kevin Brady's visit there.  He IS their representative.  Where to next?

"The Kansas City Southern line reached the community in 1897, and the Orange and Northwestern Railroad (later part of the Missouri Pacific) was chartered in 1901. The community remained a focal point for racial and other conflicts, however, witnessing, for example, activity by the Ku Klux Klan."

I had the pleasure of visiting there when I was dating a woman in Texas City who lived there.  I would like to say the history has passed, but you'd better not be there if your hair is a millimeter too long or your skin isn't just the right shade of "white."  This article from CNN confirms it.  In the article it states the following.

"Vidor was one of hundreds of communities in America known as "sundown towns," places where blacks were not welcome after dark. In some of these towns, signs -- handwritten or printed -- were posted, saying things like "Whites Only After Dark." But in general, sundown towns existed by reputation. Blacks knew they were places to avoid after dark."

I'm sure this has nothing to do with Kevin Brady's visit there, though.  He IS their representative.

Liberty County Congressional Update

No KKK there, thank goodness.  See?  No connection.  I did find this interesting article from KHOU.com, a Houston television news station, which states this.

"HOUSTON -- Two alleged members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas are facing murder charges in the 2008 death of a Livingston man, U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced Friday.

Steven Walter Cooke, 43, of Tomball, and 28-year-old David Jason Michels, of Magnolia, made their initial court appearances on Wednesday and were indicted in July.

In addition to murder, Cooke and Michels are also accused of conspiracy to commit murder and possessing and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence resulting in death.

According to the indictment, Cooke and Michels killed Scott Freeman in October of 2008 in Liberty County in a bid to maintain and increase their position within the ABT."

Really, though, there's probably no connection.  I'm probably just still shocked about the recent KKK incident in my neighborhood.  Kevin Brady IS the representative here.

San Jacinto  County Congressional Update

Nothing alarming here.  Just some good ol' boys having fun as stated in this article.

"HOUSTON - A fired black highway patrolman disclosed pictures Wednesday of a 1989 birthday party in which white troopers donned pointed hoods emblazoned with a mark of the Ku Klux Klan.

Three of four Polaroid photographs show a smiling Trooper Darron Keith Anderson, 35, seated in front of as many as eight uniformed Texas Department of Public Safety troopers wearing white hoods marked with "KKK."

The hoods are part of the traditional garb worn by members of the Ku Klux Klan, a white supremacist group."

I'm not sure where they got the hoods, but it was probably innocent and has nothing to do with Kevin Brady's visit.  He IS their representative.

Trinity Lions Club Lunch

**This event hosted by the Trinity Lions Club and Mr. Brady is the guest speaker.  Visitors are always welcome at the meeting. There may be a meal cost.

Nothing much here either.  The Lions Club does some really good things.  Trinity is just a nice place where people like to get together and wear costumes.

Now this is something Texas really needs.  There are many people losing their jobs due to continued corporate downsizing.  The food banks have been over-stressed in Texas.  I don't understand the location, though.  The Woodlands seems to be a little out of the way for most people who need the help of food banks.  I'm sure there's a need even there, though, with all the corporate downsizing going on.  Some think the beautiful community for the rich isn't what it seems, though.  Still, considering his wealthiest supporters live there, he should visit.  He IS their representative.

Conroe is close to The Woodlands.  It used to be a "Sundown Town."  It seems one poor soul can't seem to find a chapter in the area to join, so someone recommended the National Alliance.  I'm sure this has nothing to do with Brady's visit.  He's their representative.  I did find a cute little video titled "KKK Field Day," but it just looks like some family fun.

Seeking Answers on Shuttle Snub

 

 

 

Like you, I was stunned by NASA's snub of Houston to be the home of a retired space shuttle. I joined with my colleagues in the Texas delegation to demand specific answers from the administration. For Houston , this is more than a tourist attraction. Our people's blood, sweat, and tears were poured into manned space flight. This is about respecting the families of the astronauts weve lost who support bringing the shuttle home to the home of manned space flight. A shuttle belongs in Houston .

 

Now this isn't a bad thing.  I've worked with a lot of people who work at NASA.  Many of the people I know knew the astronauts on a personal level.  I'm a little curious as to how he'll wrangle this into a political issue, though.

National Taxpayers Union Honor  

 

Last Friday, National Taxpayer Union (NTU) Federal Government Affairs Manager Brandon Greife presented Representative Kevin Brady (R-TX) with the 2011 Taxpayers' Friend Award for receiving an "A" grade in NTU's annual Rating of Congress. While many Members of Congress talk about a fiscally responsible government, Rep. Brady backed up those words with solid votes. This Award recognizes that he is a steadfast and effective ally in our battle to make Washington accountable to taxpayers again.

S&P downgrades the U.S. 's Outlook to Negative

 

 

"Very large budget deficits and rising government indebtedness" are cited as reasons for Standard & Poors decision to downgrade the United States economic outlook to negative. America 's dangerous deficits have come home to roost. Standard & Poors is comparing our nation's deficits and debts to our AAA peers and finding reason for concern.

Last week, the House passed the Ryan Republican Budget plan which would cut government spending by $6.2 trillion over the next ten years and lower the deficit by over $4 trillion compared with the President's budget. This news from S&P should be a wakeup call for the Senate and the White House. President Obama needs to stop ridiculing Rep. Ryan's plan which begins to seriously address our country's long term spending issues and start supporting it as the best way forward.

S&P said their move signaled there's at least a one-in-three chance that the United States ' long term rating could fall within two years.

 

It's good to see that he's getting an award from the National Taxpayers Union.  With the way the economy is going, it's probably hard to find someone to give you awards.

Until I started looking into this, I didn't realize how much such racist groups had grown in Texas.  I ran across this, though.

It seems that membership in these organizations increases when the economy is bad.  I'm sure they're just good Christian groups who are trying to band together to help one another in hard times.



Now I've known people who were in these organizations, but they really seemed to be in the minority.  Of course, people can be one thing to your face and another thing behind your back, just like on the internet.  I do suppose Kevin Brady is a good representative.  He seems to represent the majority of voters in his district pretty well.
