Now a race begins between computers HAL and human Bowman to reach the monolith placers. The winner will achieve the next step in evolution, whatever that may be. -

After initial tests, he claims he entered an alternate physical and mental state. Although unbelieving of Eddies claims, his colleagues Arthur Rosenberg and Mason Parrish, as well as Eddies wife, Emily, who is in her own right a respected academic, are concerned for Eddies well being. However, if Eddies claims are indeed true, he could do irreparable harm to himself and others around him, especially if his altered states are uncontrollable. -
