A mother tiger gave birth to premature cubs who died soon after their births, and then started to decline in health herself. The veterinarians felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a depression. When no tiger cubs could be found to replace them, they decided to see if she would surrogate babies of another species.
