The lava of Kawah Ijen volcano in Indonesia glows a luminescent bright blue, like the flames of Hades reaching through the earth's crust. -
2.
There is no other volcano like this in the world. -
3.
The blue lava results from concentrated amounts of sulfuric acid in mountain that--when melted--release the sulfuric acid into air; when the air is in excess of 359 celsius, the chemicals combust into the blue flames you see in these pictures. -
4.
The lava itself actually is roughly the same color as other lava, but the sulfuric flames completely enveloping it would never give that indication. Well, not never: The lava only appears blue at night. -
5.
Light from the sun shines through the flames and reveals the lava's true colors, but at night the effect is magical. -
