38 years ago a nurse cared for Amanda Scarpinati in the pediatric unit of Albany Medical Center in New York. She had been badly burned by a steam vaporizer in her home. These photos are all that remain from that day. Amanda has used the photos as a source of strength as she endured years of bullying because of the scars from her burns.

“Growing up as a child, disfigured by the burns, I was bullied and picked on, tormented. I’d look at those pictures and talk to her, even though I didn’t know who she was. I took comfort looking at this woman who seemed so sincere, caring for me,” says Amanda.

For 38 years Amanda has wanted to know the identity of the nurse. After posting the photos to Facebook it didn’t take long for the internet to solve the mystery.

The nurse’s name is Sue Berger. The women were reunited at the Albany Medical Center earlier this week.
