Today is a big day for science. And depending on your views it may be the end of days. Just a few moments ago the Large Hadron Collider or LHC successfully fired particles at 99.9% the speed of light and if it went well we may have created the first man-made black holes. The tests could answer some of the biggest questions in quantum physics such as why we are made of matter and not anti-matter, what exactly are atoms made of, and was that big bang all about, anyway?
The problem that some scientists are up in arms about is that black holes have the potential to grow exponentially. Worse case scenario? It swallows the big blue and green in less than four years... So don't worry, we still have time to watch a few more features and write a few more blogs before we turn to space pudding.
Most scientists, however, are uncharacteristically non-doomsday about it. They point out that the sun projects cosmic rays of far greater energy to the earth every day and so far the great matriarch has sta ... Read more ...
Ebaumsworld is a unique site on the internet. I only recently discovered this, despite visiting here for several years. I discovered a community of very interesting people from all over the world. I think Ebaums has the potential to overtake Youtube in the future. Before discovering this community I would visit once a week or every other week. That has changed thanks to people like UofL. What makes Ebaums unique is the community of people blogging, making comments, submitting content, and sharing opinions. And I'm going to share mine.
As I see it, one of your most loyal members was burnt at the stake for making a mistake that really wasn't all that severe, although the consequences were. What made this situation different from others doing what he did was only seperated by an programming error; that he reported to you. I recall him mentioning he considered employement as your staff. Whether he was serious or not I don't know, but I think the thought had crossed his mind. He believed in yo ... Read more ...
This might be a heavy subject for EBW, but I'm tired of hearing liberals paraphrase what Conservatives claim about Global Warming so I'd like to clear the air, shall I say?
1. We realize the temperatures are warming up and are not claiming the atmosphere is getting colder or staying the same.
2. We recogonize that CO2 has an involvement in those temperatures.
3. We know that CO2 levels have increased over the last 100 years by about 35% based on the ice core samples taken at the poles.
4. We know the ice caps are receding.
5. We know that the sea levels have rose slightly.
Now here are some other facts that is not widely known by most liberals and probably a decent amount of conservatives:
1. Temperatures measured before 1975 are not accurate enough or cover a wide enough area to detect the subtle changes in temperature that we are talking about. Now we have satelites. Before that we used thermometers scattered around land masses at ground level, weather b ... Read more ...
I remember very well this girl in my fifth grade class. Her name was Krysty. I wasn't overcome with dreams of romance and desperate longing when I saw her, not because she wasn't pretty or wasn't smart. She was all those things a boy wants. And there inlied the problem. She was too perrfect, and such perfection was unattainable for a humble boy. But girls laugh, and boys dream. Lucky was I that she knew my name!
As the years past and we grew, first into the akward years of junior high, and then into the maturity that comes with adult situations thrust upon children in the teen years, Krysty kept her grace, unlike so many I knew. I can't remember her not smiling or laughing. Fun followed Krysty like a shadow ready to play.
Make no mistake, Krysty was mature back then. She knew what she wanted in life. And life gave it to her. With a presence like hers, the people around her would reflect her energy, back to her and among themselves. Everyone she met became an instant genuine friend.
