   This was the Indian wildlife agency trying
  to locate and move a problem tiger. The man
  only lost 3 fingers.

  He didn't lose any fingers and he
  wasn't mauled to death. His hand was
  punctured though, and it healed with a
  nasty scar. There's longer versions of
  this video that document it. He also
  didn't have a machete. He had 2
  sticks, used to steer the elephant.
  And it's "wielding," for the
  person who posted this. So I guess he
  could change it to "wielding 2
