The title was changed to "Return" of the Jedi two months before the movie was released, due to revenge being a motivation unbecoming of a Jedi. For years afterward, Lucasfilm vehemently denied that the title had ever been "Revenge of the Jedi" and even called merchandise and promotional materials made prior to the change "fake."
