A Self-Driving Car Got Pulled Over for ‘Driving Under the Influence’

We’ve *been* saying A.I. is a bad influence!

A car in California was pulled over after making an illegal U-turn. Seeing such erratic driving patterns, the police pulled the car over on suspicion of driving under the influence — only to discover that there was no one behind the wheel.

“Officers stopped the vehicle and contacted the company to let them know about the ‘glitch,’” the police wrote in a Facebook post. “Since there was no human driver, a ticket couldn’t be issued (our citation books don’t have a box for ‘robot’). Hopefully the reprogramming will keep it from making any more illegal moves.”

So, you might be wondering, if a Waymo breaks the law, who pays the fine? It turns out, no one. As reported by the Washington Post, autonomous vehicles in California can’t receive moving violations because, by law, such violations must be issued to a driver. This is set to change in June 2026 — but until then, watch out for any Waymos that look like they’ve had a few!
