X, the “everything app,” has a new product feature and it could only have been conceived by the greatest mind of our time, Elon Musk. The feature, which is being compared to Fortnite’s Battle Pass, gives various incentives for Grok users to interact with Ani, the app’s anime-themed AI companion. Users can interact daily for relationship points that eventually unlock “rewards,” including new outfits.

While the idea of gamifying AI companionship might sound insane to any normal person in a real relationship with another human being, Elon might actually be onto something here. This week, NPR reported that one in five high school students has either “dated” an AI or knows someone who has.

And we all know how popular Fortnite is.

So, taking the gaming structure of Fortnite and integrating that into X’s AI companion Ani is actually a pretty good idea – even if it gives us normies the heebie-jeebies.
