I think there was a movie about this. I’m sure at the end, everything turned out fine!

Argentina has a bold, new idea about how they stop crime: Use computers to stop it from happening in the first place!

According to El Pais, the government of Argentina has become obsessed with the idea of replacing state workers with artificial intelligence. Not only that, but they plan to use these A.I. systems to prevent, detect, investigate and prosecute crime.

Hey, that’s all the things! Shouldn’t a human be involved in *some* part of the process?

Apparently, the Argentinian government has confronted that question and simply answered “nah.” Instead, they’re tasking computers with “patrolling open social platforms, applications and websites” in order to “detect potential threats, identify movements of criminal groups or anticipate disturbances.” Furthermore, the computers will “[analyze] images from security cameras in real time in order to detect suspicious activities or identify wanted persons using facial recognition” — all in service of being able to develop a system to “predict future crimes.”

So if you’re in Argentina and the police come and kick your door down, don’t worry — it’s just because you were going to commit a crime in the future. Doesn’t that make you feel safer?
