Larry Bushart Jr., a 61-year-old from Tennessee, was arrested last month after posting two memes, one of Charlie Kirk and another of President Trump, into a Facebook group organizing a vigil for Kirk. Members of the group reported Bushart, alleging his posts were inciting violence against their community.

The post in question featured a quote from President Trump saying, “We have to get over it,” in reference to a school shooting that took place in 2024 at Perry High School in Iowa. The members of the Facebook group assumed Bushart was making threats against the high school in their community, which is also called Perry High School.

The other meme included a picture of Kirk in the moments following his death. While the Kirk meme is clearly insensitive and meant to elicit a reaction from the Facebook group, the Trump meme was a direct quote taken from the President.

Bushart is currently being held on a $2 million bond and faces charges for “threats of mass violence on school property.”

While Perry County Sheriff Nick Weems said the insensitive Charlie Kirk memes were protected free speech, the direct Trump quote was considered an incitement of violence.
