Remember when the world was freaking out about the Chicago Rat Hole? Well, it turns out it wasn’t a rat hole after all, but a squirrel hole, according to a group of scientists who recently published a research paper investigating the site.
The study, aptly titled “Rodent indent not self-evident: a case of mistaken identity of the ‘Chicago Rat Hole’,” was published in Biology Letters and concludes that the hole was most likely caused by an “Eastern grey squirrel, fox squirrel or muskrat.”

The study makes this claim with a 98.67% degree of certainty.
While it doesn’t make the hole any less funny, it’s pretty awesome what science is capable of.
