A full-blown scandal is unfolding on Chinese social media, and it all centers around a restaurant called Xibei.

Basically, the chain is known for having fresh, family-friendly meals. The image collapsed was thrown into question after entrepreneur and influencer Lou Yonghao visited the restaurant and made a post on social media saying it was overpriced — and that they *gasp* sold pre-made dishes.

Now, in a country that’s used to TGI Fridays, this isn’t the biggest deal. But in China, this was a scandal. His post went viral on Chinese social media, and soon, customers from around the country were sharing their gripes about the chain’s prices and vowing never to eat there again.

In response, Xibei denied that it was using pre-made dishes, only pre-prepared ingredients. To prove that fact, they invited people into their kitchens to see how their food is made. They also mocked the influencer who called them out.

The problem? When people came into their kitchens, they found year-old ingredients being sold as fresh, and certain dishes being served across multiple days.

Now, the chain has apologized and pledged to make numerous changes to their menu and how they prepare and serve food. Still, their business has gone down significantly in popularity.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., we’re entirely unfazed by the idea that our food is just being reheated from frozen and served to us. As long as it happens in a location we’re loosely calling a “kitchen,” it’s all fine by us!
