If you haven’t been to a concert recently, you’re probably not aware of how feral audiences have become. Any etiquette around moshing or personal space is gone — instead, every show is an all-out brawl complete with Instagram selfie stations and novelty additions to keep the crowd entertained during, you know, the entertainment.
One of these additions is the humble beach ball. They’ve been around forever, but festivals have turned them into a staple, dropping dozens of them into the audience covered in brand names in order to keep crowds engaged.
What do the performers think of this? While we can’t be sure about everyone, Shirley Manson of Garbage definitely hates it.
During a recent show, Manson singled out an audience member who kept bouncing a beach ball around. Later, she followed up with a post on Threads, writing, “I make NO APOLOGIES whatsoever for getting annoyed at beachballs at shows. I joined a band because I HATED THE [expletive] BEACH.”
To those who disagreed, she said they could “continue listening to Spotify and toss your stupid beach balls around like you are ten years old.” But for those who actually wanted to enjoy the music, she encouraged them to go to the concerts to respect the artistry of the musicians — not “treating us all like circus performers.”
Hard to disagree when you phrase it like that!
