Life isn’t all fun and games. Sometimes you have to do things you don’t like. Or, sometimes you should do things you don’t like to be a well-rounded person. But apparently, that’s too big of an ask for many new Gen Z parents, who have realized that reading to their kids kind of sucks.
According to The Guardian, Gen Z parents are reading less to their children than parents before them, with just 41 percent of Gen Zers reporting reading to their children, down from 64 percent in 2012.

Not only is this creating a future generation of illiterates, but will eventually collapse the market for books and bookstores. pic.twitter.com/VbeGVrnPoX— Nick Kapur (@nick_kapur) August 12, 2025
I hate to break it to you guys, but the point of reading your kid Goodnight Moon isn’t the plot. Yes, some little kid saying “goodnight to the moon” over and over again is a dumb premise, but it teaches them to read and that’s what’s important.
In fairness, though, Gen Z doesn’t even read to themselves, so why would they read to their kids?
