According to Sky News, William "Billy" Smith was convicted of multiple fraud offences on Monday, a charge that came with a 45-month prison sentence, though by a stroke of pure luck, he was released from prison later that same day.

Smith, who was one of two inmates mistakenly released from U.K. jails this week and one of 262 mistakenly released inmates since March of 2024 (yes, really), eventually turned himself in to police Thursday after a three-day manhunt. The error that caused Smith’s release was allegedly due to the court telling the prison that his sentence had been suspended.

Smith didn’t make his return in much fanfare, simply walking up to HMP Wandsworth smiling and waving.
