Interstellar Object 3I/Atlas Has Been Photographed for the First Time

Whatever it is, I hope it’s having fun.

Recently, four telescopes have turned their lenses to capture photos of 3I/Atlas, including NASA's Hubble, SPHEREx, Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and James Webb Space Telescope. And so far, the scientific community is stumped over its behavior, which is unlike any comets astronomers have observed before.

Most astronomers believe it’s a comet, though Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb thinks it may be something more sinister, claiming it could potentially be a “hostile alien mothership.” And while he’s made wild claims like this in the past, there is zero proof he’s correct.

That said, 3I/Atlas is still proving to totally baffle astronomers.

3I/Atlas is clearly important enough to warrant the usage of four separate satellites — and that’s not because it’s an alien spaceship, but because it’s only the third observed interstellar comet to enter our solar system. It will be making its way through our solar system over the next couple of months, and as it does, you can expect more headlines about how it spells the “end of humanity.”

To which I say – don’t get my hopes up!
