Robert Downey Jr. was recently spotted in full costume on the set his new HBO project, The Sympathizer. If you were looking for RDJ of the MCU past, you might want to keep looking. The Oscar-nominated actor looks more like an aging Carrot Top than Tony Stark these days.

HBO and A24's adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by the same name, follows a half Vietnamese/half French communist spy during the end of the Vietnam war.

Downey Jr. is set to portray multiple supporting roles in the upcoming thriller series, each of which is a different protagonist to the main characters. It seems as though RDJ is trying to distance himself from his Iron Man days in dramatic fashion.

According to Deadline, the series has begun filming in both Thailand and Los Angeles. Rumors of a Fall 2023 release date for the series have started circulating, which would coincide with the newest HBO Max/Discovery Plus reconfiguration.
