Italy is pretty serious about dogs. The country already has a dog-dropping DNA database, which is used to track dog owners who don’t pick up after their pooches, and according to CNN, Italy will soon start taxing visitors traveling to their country with dogs.
Starting in 2026, Bolzano, Italy, will begin charging visitors 1.50 euros a day if they’re planning to bring their pup to town. Travel taxes are very popular in Italy and many other places in Europe, so there’s a precedent for the new regulation.

However, the new tax doesn’t just impact tourists, as locals will now be charged a yearly fee of 100 euros for their dogs, too. The tax is meant to offset the cost of street cleaning, and the funds raised will be used to build new dog parks.
