Lay’s Claims 42% of People Don’t Know Chips Are Made From Potatoes
Do they think we’re stupid? I mean, we are — but do they think we’re *that* stupid?

Lay’s recently announced plans to rebrand their packaging to focus more on the humble potato. Bags of chips will now prominently feature potatoes in addition to the phrase “Made with Real Potatoes.”
Some people might look at this and think, “That’s stupid. Who doesn’t know that potato chips come from potatoes?”
Well, according to Lay’s, basically everyone. They announced this rebrand with the absolutely incredible claim that “42% of people who enjoy Lay’s don’t realize they’re made with real, farm-grown potatoes.”
Immediately, outlets began reporting the statistic as “People are so stupid that they don’t realize potato chips are made from potatoes.”
Realistically, this is likely the result of survey question trickery. They probably framed the question as something like “Do you think Lay’s uses real, farm-grown potatoes, or some sort of lab-grown monstrosity to make their chips?” Knowing that American food manufactures are the same ones who call White Cheddar Cheetos “100% Natural,” people say it’s the second — then Lay’s is surprised that people think their potato chips are actually made from Mattel-brand Certified Potato Alternative.
Anyway, Lay’s now says it’s putting the potato front and center. Good for them.
