McDonald’s CEO Says Tipping Culture Is Unfair

I mean, true.

If you’ve never worked as a server, you might not be aware that most of the country allows servers to be paid just $2.10 per hour for their labor. That means that most restaurants really only have to pay full-time servers about $340 per month, with the rest of their pay coming from tips.

Other countries look at this system and, perhaps rightfully, call us insane. Heck, you don’t even have to go to other countries to hear about how crazy this system is — you can even ask the leaders of popular fast-food chains!

Recently, McDonald’s Chairman and CEO Chris Kempczinski was being interviewed on CNBC when he decried the practice of paying tipped employees less than the minimum wage. “Right now, there’s an uneven playing field. If you’re a restaurant that allows tips or has tips as part of your equation, you’re essentially getting the customer to pay for your labor,” he said in part.

Instead, he advocated for policies like those present in the states of California and Minnesota, where an employer must actually pay their workers the same minimum wage as everybody else. This, he says, will help with both poverty and employee turnover.

Show me the lie, I guess.
