A 56-year-old Italian man is under investigation after authorities discovered that he had been impersonating his late mother for nearly three years in a scam officials have called a “Mrs Doubtfire scandal.”

The man, who has not yet been publicly identified, is being investigated for failing to report his mother’s death so he could continue claiming her pension, which amounted to roughly $61,000 a year.

The scamming son was so bold that he once successfully renewed her identity card, dressing up in her clothes and covering himself in make-up. However, his sham fell apart when one Italian authority noticed his “masculine features” and started an investigation.

It is believed that Graziella Dall’Oglio, the scammer’s mother, died of natural causes at age 82, though an official autopsy has yet to be conducted.
