Journalist Pablo Torre recently alleged that Kawhi Leonard, an NBA player for the L.A. Clippers, was given a no-show job at an environmental start-up in order to circumvent the league’s cap on payments.

According to Torre, citing seven anonymous former employees for San Francisco-based Aspiration, Leonard received a $28 million endorsement deal for doing basically nothing. When workers questioned why this was the case, they were explicitly told it was to “circumvent the salary cap.”

What’s the connection between Aspiration and the Clippers? Well, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer had previously given the company a $50 million investment. Yeah, that’s a bit of a smoking gun.

For what it’s worth, the Clippers have denied this, saying in a statement, in part, “Neither the Clippers nor Steve Ballmer circumvented the salary cap. The notion that Steve invested in Aspiration in order to funnel money to Kawhi Leonard is absurd.”

They say that they’re now complying in an investigation. Either they’re telling the truth and Aspiration made one of the dumbest investments of all time, or there’s something else going on here.
