Police in New Jersey were recently startled by reports claiming that certain parts of the state had been overrun with monkeys. Concerned, they ventured to what appeared to be the heart of the monkey takeover, Georgia King Village, and began to look for signs of monkeys. What they found was … well, nothing.

It turns out, there was a rumor floating around Facebook that monkeys were brought to the area to be sold, but got loose. Around the same time, people began claiming that they had seen pictures of the monkeys out and about.

According to police, however, the story and the surrounding images weren’t real — and were instead generated by AI.

“Officers have not located any monkeys,” said Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda. “Any photos or videos posted on social media regarding this incident are likely AI-generated.”

We know not to believe everything you read on Facebook — but now, you can’t even trust everything you see!
