New Wood Just Dropped
Just when you thought there was nothing left to innovate, we’ve got a brand new type of wood that’s ten times stronger than steel.

An American company called InventWood claims to have perfected something they’re calling “Superwood,” a material with up to 10 times the strength-to-weight ratio of steel while also being up to six times lighter.
According to the company, the whole thing works by compressing the structure of the cellulose. This means that, theoretically, it can work on a wide range of woods, including bamboo. It also means that the resultant material is 20 times stronger than natural wood and is ten times more resistant to dents.
That said, the carbon footprint is larger than wood alone — though the company says it’s still less than steel.
For the time being, the company is focusing on external applications like decks and cladding. However, they’re open to using it for other applications — maybe this time we can make a real, functional Spruce Goose!
